Boss Focus: Attumen the Huntsman

Hello there my dear fellow robe-clad girls and gals.

I decided to ramble a bit about Karazhan. My lovely guild has Karazhan on farm and clears it weekly. Since i am growing more and more familiar with the instance i will try to give a complete rundown on healing in Karazhan as a holy priest.

I will focus on bosses first, but i will give some love to specific trashpulls, too. ;-)

Attumen the Huntsman

In a Nutshell

Attumen the Huntsman, and his steed, Midnight, form the first and entirely optional boss encounter in Karazhan. The fight is more or less a tank and spank with no elements of surprise.
As a well-geared healer, the fight is quite relaxing (a.k.a. boring) and should be no problem if your equipment is sufficient and coordination is somewhat solid.

Spell Focus: Flash Heal

Description

Flash Heal (Rank 9)
470 Mana, 40 yd range
1.5 sec cast
Heals a friendly target for 1101 to 1279.

Flash Heal is kind of an emergency spell for the priest. It is fast, but not very mana efficient.
You will use Flash Heal if you need to heal someone very quickly. Either because they may die if you don’t, or if you cannot spare much time to stand still and cast.
Imagine a fight where random raid members are taking mediocre amounts of damage, but you cannot predict any damage patterns to heal in advance or cast a Renew on them. This is where Flash Heal shines.

Spell Focus: Greater Heal

Description

Greater Heal (Rank 7)
825 Mana, 40 yd range
3 sec cast
A slow casting spell that heals a single target for 2396 to 2784.

As you can see, Greater Heal is a rather slow spell but it packs a punch.
Nearly every priest dedicated to healing has 5 talent points invested into Divine Fury. So the effective casting time of your Greater Heal will be 2.5 seconds, not 3.
This is still quite some time. Many bosses hit your tank more than once in 2.5 seconds. So you have to be careful about using this spell. It is however far from useless.

The Five-Second Rule, a Story of Love & Hate

Welcome to a bit of theorycrafting, my dear fellow priests. I won’t do any number-crunching, i leave this for people who like it.

Today we want to talk about the five-second rule, or short the 5SR. Its a nice thing and every mana-aware Priest should know about it. In essence it comes down to this:

For five seconds after spending mana on a spell, the normal spirit-based mana regeneration will be nulled.

This means that spending mana on a spell, makes you loose mana in two ways:

  • The spell you have just cast costs mana, which is substracted from your mana pool.
  • Your mana regeneration will drop for the next five seconds, resulting in less mana gained.
