BA Shared Topic: How did you come up with your character names?

The current Shared Topic on Blog Azeroth is “How did you come up with your character names?” and has been brought to us by Bunnyfer. I will follow suit and post my rambling here and now. :-)

Aylah was my first character and I have to admit that I just used my imagination to create a name that sounded night elvish and hinted of nature and such things. I have been playing Pen & Paper Roleplaying games for a very long time, and creating names from scratch is nothing that comes hard to me.

My second char was Rancora. With her, I wanted to theme the name tightly to the class. Since warriors use rage, I thought about synonyms and ended up using “rancor”. Thus Rancora was born.

Next up came Rakel. Since the Burning Crusade was still far off, and Fear Ward was such a nice spell to have, I decided to go for the stout folk, and I needed a name to go with it. Since I somewhat associate dwarves with colder climates and Nordic mythology, looking through some online dictionaries with Nordic names provided a solid selection. I liked the Nordic version of “Rachel”, so Rakel breathed the crisp, cold air of Dun Morogh not very soon afterwards.

My cute, little warlock ended up with the name Agonya. As you can see, it’s pretty obvious. *razz*

BA Shared Topic: Does WoW Need Another Party Role?

A very nice shared topic brought up by Fumbleknock from WoWblog Plus.

To answer this we have to take a good long look at the fundamentals that define our World of Warcraft:

Damage *punch*

Everything evolves around it. ;-)

  • Tanks should receive it exclusively, because they have the tools to handle it best.
  • Healers need to heal the damage caused in order to keep the players alive.
  • Damage Dealers need to deal as much damage as rational possible to prevent the mobs from dealing damage as soon as possible.

So, we have a role dedicated to damage mitigation, one for damage removal and one for dealing damage.

Even utility abilities can be sorted into one of these categories. Polymorph, for example, is a tool for damage removal or damage dealing (sheeping a healer). Curse of Weakness on the other hand is damage mitigation. The list goes on and on.
